When you add a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 list to Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, you receive the following error message:
Outlook cannot download to this remote data because Admin Settings allow only creation of Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders file (.pst).
This behavior occurs if the value for the NewPSTFormat registry entry that is in the following registry subkey is set to 3
When the value for the NewPSTFormat registry entry is set to 3
, Outlook 2007 uses the Enforce ANSI creation setting. Therefore, when Outlook 2007 creates a personal folders (.pst) file, the .pst file uses ANSI format. However, Outlook 2007 supports Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services folders only if the .pst file uses Unicode format. By design, Outlook 2007 works in this manner.
Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To work around this behavior, set the NewPSTFormat registry entry to a value other than 3. The following list contains values for the NewPSTFormat registry entry and contains the settings that correspond to those values.
- 0 - Default Unicode
If you set the NewPSTFormat registry value to 0, Outlook 2007 uses the Default Unicode setting. You can use the Default Unicode setting if you want to connect a Windows SharePoint Services list to Outlook 2007.
1 - Default ANSI
If you set the NewPSTFormat registry value to 1, Outlook 2007 uses the Default ANSI setting. This setting does not prevent Outlook 2007 from creating a .pst file in Unicode format for a Windows SharePoint Services list. When you add a Windows SharePoint Services list to Outlook 2007, Outlook 2007 automatically creates the .pst file in Unicode format to store the list information.
- 2 - Enforce Unicode creation
If you set the NewPSTFormat registry value to 2, Outlook 2007 creates Unicode pst files for any automatically created pst file (for example, a SharePoint pst). If you manually create a new pst file, you can only create Unicode pst files because the ANSI pst option is disabled. If you have an existing ANSI pst file, it can be used with your Outlook profile.
- 3 - Enforce ANSI creation
If you set the NewPSTFormat registry value to 3, Outlook uses the Enforce ANSI creation setting. Using this setting prevents Outlook 2007 from creating a .pst file in Unicode format. You cannot use the Enforce ANSI creation setting if you want to connect a Windows SharePoint Services list to Outlook 2007.
To set the value of the NewPSTFormat registry entry, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
- Double-click NewPSTFormat.
- In the Value data box, type the value that you want, and then click OK.
- Click Exit on File menu to exit Registry Editor.
