Consider the following scenario. In a Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 environment, you create a shortcut to a shared file or to a network share. Then, in an earlier version of the Windows operating system, such as in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003, you try to use this shortcut. In this scenario, you encounter unexpected issues, as in the following specific scenarios.
Scenario 1- You create a shortcut for a file in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008.
- In an earlier version of Windows, you use the Open command in an application to browse to the folder where the shortcut is located.
In this scenario, you may not see the shortcut in the
Open dialog box as expected.
For example, assume that you create a shortcut for a text file in a folder in Windows Vista. Then, in Windows XP, you start a Notepad.exe process, and you try to open the file through the shortcut. However, when you browse in the
Open dialog box to the folder where the shortcut is located, you do not see the shortcut for the text file.
Scenario 2- You create a shortcut for a network share in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008.
- In an earlier version of Windows, you try to use the shortcut.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
This problem occurs because Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP do not use the same format for storing shortcuts as the format that is used by Windows Vista and by Windows Server 2008.
To resolve this problem, install the following hotfix on the earlier version of Windows.
