Error message when you visit a sub-folder under a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 list that contains more than 2,000 list items that have non-inheriting permissions: "#RENDER FAILED"

SYMPTOMS

You add 2,000 list items that have non-inheriting permissions to a sub-folder under a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 list. The "Require content approval for submitted items?" option is enabled for the list. When you visit the sub-folder, you receive the following error message:
#RENDER FAILED
Additionally, the following event is logged in the Event viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3
Event Category: Database
Event ID: 5586
Unknown SQL Exception 8003 occurred. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below. The incoming tabular data Stream (TDS) remote procedure call (RPC) protocol stream is incorrect. Too many parameters were provided in this RPC request. The maximum is 2100.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply hotfix 957691.

957691  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=957691/ ) Description of the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 hotfix package (Sts.msp): October 28, 2008
Note After you apply this hotfix, you may still receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. This may be caused by a query that is too long and that has a large number of non-inheriting permissions. In this case, you have to reduce the number of non-inheriting permissions. If you use 5,000 or more non-inheriting permissions in the list, you may encounter this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
Keywords:
kbqfe kbfix kbbug kbexpertiseinter KB958577
