SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You try to create a cluster on a Windows Server 2008-based computer.
  • This computer uses a third-party DNS server that does not support dynamic updates.
In this scenario, the failover clustering may not let you create the cluster. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:
The network name {0} is already used in the network.

CAUSE

When you try to create a cluster, the failover clustering wizard requests an IP address. The cluster queries the DNS server to see whether this record exists. It does this to make sure that the IP address is unique and that a valid IP address was returned.

However, in addition to the original valid IP address, some third-party DNS servers may also return some additional information, such as the IP address of the DNS server itself. The cluster checks that all returned IP address are not being used. One of those IP address can be the IP address of the third-party DNS server. A conflict occurs because the DNS server does exist. Therefore, failover clustering blocks you from creating a cluster.

RESOLUTION

A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. You must apply this hotfix to every node in a cluster.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Server 2008 and the Cluster service installed on the computer.

Restart requirement

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other previously released hotfixes.

Registry information

To use this hotfix, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.

To work around this issue, remove static DNS records from the DNS server. Then, create the cluster again. After the cluster is created again, add the static records back to the DNS server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.
