Error message when you try to view a Web site that is hosted on IIS 6.0: "The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site"

SYMPTOMS

A Web site uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and is hosted on Internet Information Services 6.0. When you try to view the Web site, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Security Alert

The name of the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site
If you click Yes, you can view the Web site that uses an SSL connection.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the common name that you specified when you generated the certificate request does not match the URL that is used to access the Web site. For example, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section when the following conditions are true:
  • The common name in the certificate request is a fully qualified domain name (FQDN).
  • The URL that you use to access the Web site is an IP address or a server name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, access the Web site by using a URL that matches the common name in the certificate request. If you cannot access the Web site by using a URL that matches the common name in the certificate, create a new certificate request that uses a common name that matches the URL that is used to access the Web site. Then, have your certification authority generate a new certificate. Use the new certificate to help secure the Web site.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

If you experience this issue when you try to view a Web site that is published by a another party, the Web site publisher may have configured the certificate incorrectly. Therefore, you should report this problem to the site administrator.

Note Use caution if you provide any personal information.

To avoid any security related messages when a user accesses a Web site, the certificate for the Web site must meet the following criteria:
  • The common name in the certificate must match the URL that is used to access the Web site.
  • The certificate must be from a trusted certification authority.
  • The date for the security certificate must be valid.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0
