Consider the following scenario. You install a 64-bit edition of SQL Server 2005 on a 64-bit computer. You install both SQL Server Management Studio and the SQL Server 2005 Database Engine on the computer. When you open SQL Server Management Studio and then you click
Update Local Server Registration in the
Registered Servers window, the local instance cannot be registered.
This problem also occurs when you try to browse servers in the
Connect to Server dialog box. The local instance is not listed in the
Local Servers list.
This problem occurs because SQL Server Management Studio is running in 32-bit compatibility mode. SQL Server Management Studio tries to find the registry entry for the 64-bit local instances in the 32-bit registry instead of in the 64-bit registry.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
