  3. In the Currently installed programs list, determine whether an existing version of IntelliPoint, IntelliType Pro, or LifeCam is listed.
  4. If an existing version of the program is listed, click the program entry, and then click Remove. Follow the instructions to remove the software.
  5. If you are prompted, restart the computer.

Step 2: Download and install the latest programs or drivers for your hardware device

Note Before you install the latest software, make sure that other programs are closed. In the lower-right corner of the desktop, right-click one icon at a time to either disable the program or exit the program.

Install the IntelliPoint, IntelliType Pro, or LifeCam programs from the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/downloads/default.mspx)
If the problem continues to occur, go to method 2.

Method 2: Run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility

You can use the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove installation information for programs that are installed by using Windows Installer.

Note The Windows Installer CleanUp utility does not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it removes the installation files so that you can install, uninstall, or upgrade the program. For more information about how to download and use the Windows Install CleanUp utility, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. In the Services list, double-click Windows Installer.
  3. In the Windows Installer Properties dialog box, click Automatic in the Startup type list.
  4. Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Start the software installation.

Method 4: Perform a clean startup and clear Temp folder

When you start Windows as usual, some programs start automatically and run in the background. These programs may include antivirus programs and system programs that may interfere with product installation. When you perform a clean startup before you start the installation, you prevent these programs from starting automatically. To perform a clean startup, follow the appropriate steps for your Windows version.

Step 1: Restart the computer by using a clean startup

Note To complete this procedure, you must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.

    Windows XP and earlier versions
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type msconfig.

Method 5: Uninstall Windows Installer, and then install the latest version

Note Windows Installer (3SI) is the application installation and configuration service for Windows. These download packages will update the version of Windows Installer on the computer to version 4.5.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:
    appwiz.cpl
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, select Windows Installer (KB893803).
  4. Click Remove, and then follow the instructions to remove Windows Installer.
  5. To install the latest Windows Installer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note Download the .msi file for your version of Windows. x86 means that you have a 32-bit version of Windows, and x64 means that you have a 64-bit version. If you are not sure, download and install the x64-based version. In the "Instructions," you will find information about which file to use for the operating system.

Method 6: Install the Microsoft .NET Framework

If the problem continues to occur, install the latest version of the .NET Framework. To this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263.aspx (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/aa569263.aspx)
Click Install it now, and then follow the instructions.

The software uses .NET Framework to connect to the server to download information for the product.

How I Fixed My 1603 Error with Intellipoint 6.3 Mouse Software for Windows XP The below is if you have tried the Windows Install Cleanup and other alternatives to fixing this problem. Here we GO!!!! 1,) I loaded the following into the Registry, May elect to export a key to your desktop (any small key to your desktop for a template registry file). Edit the registry file by right clicking and selecting EDIT and delete the existing contents and paste the following into the file to be inserted into the registry. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer] "Logging"="voicewarmup" "Debug"=dword:00000007 The above key will create additional logs into your “TEMP” directory for researching and identifying the problem. After editing save it then Double Click on it to insert the above into your registry. If you do not know where your temp directory is located type the following %TEMP% in the “RUN” box. <Click on START then RUN> or Hotkey <Windows Flag “R”> enter the %TEMP% command to display your specific temp directory. 2,) Attempt to Install the Intellipoint Mouse or Keyboard software whichever is giving you problems. The 1603 error should be generated or Disk Space error in the case of version 6.2. 3.) Go to your Temp directory there should be 3 to 4 logs generated. The Temp folder may be hidden so go to Explorer by right clicking on START and select Explore or Hotkey <Windows Flag letter “E”> and Unhide folder by selecting TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW; Under the Hidden Folders box select “Show Hidden Files and Folders”. Once the logs are found open the logs using notepad or an editor of your choice. The errors generated will be at the end of the log in each instance. This is just so you get an idea of what the log generates and looks like. 4.) Perform a find for the following string in each of the logs until found. (Go to the toolbar under EDIT and then click on FIND paste the following string to find it (Without the quotes)). "Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package" In my case 4 logs where generated 2 had large amounts of data, I found the following in the second large log file. MSI (s) (58:0C) [13:21:10:495]: Note: 1: 2203 2: F:\ipoint\Setup\IP53.msi 3: -2147287037 MSI (s) (58:0C) [13:21:10:495]: SOURCEMGMT: Source is invalid due to missing/inaccessible package. MSI (s) (58:0C) [13:21:10:495]: Note: 1: 1706 2: -2147483647 3: IP53.msi The line above the string is what we need to find. The directory of the invalid entry which is in the registry causing the error, In my case it is was the following invalid entry causing the install error “F:\ipoint\Setup\IP53.msi 3”. “F” is the drive letter of my CD-ROM your drive letter may be different 5,) Now we need to find this entry and any entry closely associated to it and remove it from the registry using a mask (F:\ipoint\Setup) of the invalid directory. 6.) Click on Start then Run or hotkey <Windows Flag “R”> and type in regedit. Collapse the entire hive so you only see My Computer and the 4 Hives and select My Computer to ensure the entire registry is searched. 7.) Under the tab EDIT select find and paste “F:\ipoint\Setup” and hit enter. I deleted all accounts of the entry found. If it was a 1 to 2 line entry I deleted the entire key in the left pane. If the key had several entries under it I just deleted the F:\ipoint\Setup entry from the individual key in the right pane. In my case the entry was found 3 times, after all of the F:\ipoint\Setup entries were deleted I closed the registry. 8.) I then installed the Mouse software for Intellipoint 6.3 Successfully, No Reboot was Required period. Hope this helps you all having issues. I struggled for weeks until I found a solution by Googling for “intellipoint 1612 error” and put it in an easier format for myself. http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/455422-error-1612-general-help-please.html
