In Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you configure a merge replication. When you run the Merge Agent to synchronize data, the Merge Agent fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The Merge Agent failed after detecting that retention - based metadata cleanup has deleted metadata at the Subscriber for change not yet send to the Publisher. You must reinitialize the subscription (without upload).
This problem occurs because, when the synchronization is interrupted, some generations that have the genstatus column set to 4 are added to the Msmerge_genhistory table. These generations are never cleaned up, and the subscriber is marked as expired.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
When this problem occurs, you can run the following query in the subscription database to return the generations that have the genstatus column set to 4.
select genstatus, coldate, generation from msmerge_genhistory (nolock) where genstatus=4
