You cannot change the master page that is associated with a specific page layout in SharePoint Designer 2007
In Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007, you try to change the master page that is associated with a specific page layout. To do this, you try to click
Master Page on the
Format menu. However, the commands on the
Format menu are unavailable. Therefore, you cannot change the master page that is associated with a specific page layout.
This problem occurs because all the page layouts use the master page that is specified in the custom master page settings.
To work around this problem, do not use the page layouts. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start SharePoint Designer 2007.
- Instead of using the page layouts, create a simple page from a custom master page. To do this, point to New on the File menu, and then click Create from Master Page.
All the page layouts inherit from the
PublishingLayoutPage class. The
PublishingLayoutPage class guarantees that all the page layouts use the master page that is specified in the custom master page settings for the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
