SYMPTOMS

You try to access an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed that points to a resource that requires authentication. (The RSS feed is located on the same Web site as the resource.) After you do this, you receive the following error message in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007:
The RSS webpart does not support authenticated feeds

CAUSE

Cause 1

This issue occurs if there is a CNAME record for the SharePoint server and if the record points to an alias that does not have a registered Service Principal Name (SPN).

Cause 2

This issue occurs if you use NTLM authentication for the RSS feed instead of one of the following authentication methods:
•Kerberos authentication
•Anonymous Access

RESOLUTION

To resolve the issue, use the resolution that is appropriate to the cause.

Resolution 1

To resolve this issue, you must create a CNAME record that points to a name that has a registered SPN. To do this, follow these steps.

Check the registered SPNs for the SharePoint server

1.On a domain controller that has the Windows Support Tools installed, open a command prompt.
2.At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
Setspn –l Hostname_of_SharePoint_Server
 In the list that is displayed, locate the entry that corresponds to the following entries:
HTTP/Alias_Name
HTTP/Alias_Name.mydomain.contoso.com
Note Alias_Name corresponds to the alias that you used for the SharePoint server. For example, Alias_Name corresponds to My_SharePoint_Site.

Create a CNAME record on the Domain Name System (DNS) server

On the server that is running the DNS service in the domain, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
2. In the Navigation pane, expand Forward Lookup Zones, and then click the node for the required domain. For example, click mydomain.contoso.com.
3. In the Details pane, right-click an empty area, and then click New Alias (CNAME).
4. In the Alias Name (uses parent domain if left blank) box, type the Alias_Name that you noted in the "Check the registered SPNs for the SharePoint server" section. For example, type My_SharePoint_Site.
5. In the Fully Qualified domain name (FQDN) for the host box, type an appropriate name. For example, type SharePoint_Server.mydomain.contoso.com.
6. Click OK.

Resolution 2

To resolve this issue, you must configure anonymous access for the Web application, for the site collection, and for the resource to which the RSS feed points. To do this, follow these steps:
1.Enable anonymous access for the Web application. To do this follow these steps:
a. Start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, and then click Application Management.
b. Under Application Security, click Authentication providers.
c. In the Web Application box, click the arrow, click Change Web Application, and then click the Web application that you want.
d. Under the Zone heading, click Default to open the Edit Authentication page.
e. On the Edit Authentication page, click to select the Enable anonymous access check box, and then click Save.
2. Enable anonymous access for the site collection. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Open the site collection that is hosted in the Web application in the browser.
b. Click Site Actions, and then click Site Settings.
c. Under Users and Permissions, click Advanced permissions.
d. Click Settings, and then click Anonymous Access.
e. Click Lists and libraries, and then click OK.
3.Enable anonymous access for the resource. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Step 3 is applicable only if the resource does not inherit permissions from the parent node.
a. In the Web application in which anonymous access is enabled, click View All Site Content.
b. Click the resource list that you want.
c. Click Settings, and then click the settings command that is related to your resource list. For example, click Document Library Settings if your resource is a Document Library.
d. Under Permissions and Management, click the entry that modifies permissions for the affected resource. For example, click Permissions for this document library.
e. Click Settings, and then click Anonymous Access.
f. Click the appropriate user rights, and then click OK. For example, click View items, and then click OK.

Another anwser to this issue is to set the security in your browser to Local Intranet for such sites. Example: Use your browser to access the Feed, then on the bottom of your browser you will see the IE globe with Internet by it...now double click the globe, then click Local Intranet in the new window, then click the Sites button, then the Advanced button, then the Add button (you may have to remove the checkmark from "require server verification" or you may receive an error). Now, you should be able to use your favorite reader without any errors!!
