Error TF86001 or TF80042 Opening Microsoft Team Foundation Server Work Items in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Project

Action

You are using Team Foundation Server Team Explorer and attempt to open a work item or the results of a work item query in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Project.

Result

You receive an error message "TF86001: Team Foundation was unable to load the Office Add-In." You may also receive the error "TF80042: The document cannot be opened because you do not have Microsoft Excel 200n or one of its components installed."

Cause

These errors are caused when you install Team Explorer before you install Microsoft Office Excel or Microsoft Project. The Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office Run Time will not be configured to work correctly with Team Explorer and must be repaired.

Resolution



You must repair the Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office Run Time to correct this issue.
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs (or Programs and Features).
  2. Select Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (or 2008) Team Explorer.
  3. Click Change/Remove (or Uninstall/Change).
  4. In the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (or 2008) Team Explorer Setup wizard, select Repair or Reinstall, and then click Next.
  5. Click Repair on the next screen.
