You cannot use the Office File Converter feature in the Office Migration Planning Manager tool to convert lots of Excel workbooks

Article ID:951340
Last Review:April 22, 2008
Revision:1.1

SYMPTOMS

You cannot use the Microsoft Office File Converter (OFC) feature in Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) to convert lots of Office Excel workbooks. For example, you cannot convert more than 1,000 workbooks. Additionally, the operation may incorrectly report that some Excel workbooks cannot be converted.

Note The Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) is a collection of tools that enables you to prepare for migration to the Microsoft 2007 Office system. The Office File Converter (OFC) lets you convert files in bulk to the new 2007 Office release file formats. You do not have to use OFC when you use OMPM to plan for migration to the Microsoft 2007 Office system.

CAUSE

This issue is caused by a memory leak in the Excel Workbook converter (Excelcnv.exe).

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1
1.Use the OMPM reporting tool (Ompm.accdr) to export the list of all Excel workbooks.
2.Run OFC on that list.
3.Use the ImportActions.bat file to import the OFC logs into OMPM.

Note The ImportActions.bat file is included in OMPM.
4.Repeat steps 1 through 3 on all Excel workbooks that did not convert until all the workbooks are converted. If several repetitions cannot reduce the number of workbooks that did not convert, these remaining workbooks probably have genuine conversion issues.
Method 2
1.Use the OMPM reporting tool (Ompm.accdr) to export less than 1,000 Excel workbooks from OMPM at the same time.
2.Run OFC on the workbook lists.
