Error message when you try to expand an entry in a Grouped By view in Windows SharePoint Services, in SharePoint Server 2007, or in SharePoint Portal Server 2003: "<!-- #RENDER FAILED# -->"

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, or in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you try to expand an entry in a Grouped By view that is based on a datetime field.

When you do this, you receive an error message that resembles the following error message:
<!-- #RENDER FAILED# -->

CAUSE

This problem occurs if a non-English (US) language is configured as the default language for the Windows SharePoint Services account, the SharePoint Server 2007 account, or the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 account on the server that is running Microsoft SQL Server.

Specifically, this problem occurs when the date format of the selected language differs from the date format that is used in the English (US) language.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, set the default language to English (US) in SQL Server for all the accounts that you configured to access the Windows SharePoint Services database, the SharePoint Server 2007 database, or the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 database.

To do this, follow these steps, as appropriate for the version of SQL Server that you are running.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005

  1. Start SQL Server Management Studio. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and then click SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Log on as a user who has System Administrator rights.
  3. In the console tree, expand Security, and then click Logins.
  4. In the details pane, right-click the affected login account entry, and then click Properties.
  5. In the Select a page pane, click General.
  6. In the details pane, click English in the Default Language box, and then click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 4 to 6 for other login entries as needed.
  8. Exit SQL Server Management Studio.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000

  1. Start Enterprise Studio. To do this, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager.
  2. Log on as a user who has System Administrator rights.
  3. In the console tree, expand Security, and then click Logins.
  4. In the details pane, right-click the application pool login account that is used by the affected Web application, and then click Properties.
  5. In the General pane, click English in the Language box, and then click OK.
  6. Exit Enterprise Manager.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

When the default language for the login account is changed to a language other than English, the date format may change. For example, when the default language is configured as German, the date format changes to the following format:
dd/mm/yyyy
However, the SELECT statement expects the following format:
mm/dd/yyyy
Therefore, when you enter a date in the datetime field that includes a number that is larger than 12 in the first two positions, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

For example, you receive the error message when you enter the following date:
15/12/2007

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
