Error "Critical error of Source Control Provider. Please restart IDE." using Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider

Action

You are using Microsoft Visual Studio 2003, Microsoft Team Foundation Server, and the Microsoft Team Foundation Server MSSCCI Provider. You have sufficient security permissions to add source code to the Team Foundation Server and attempt to do so.

Result

Error message "Critical error of Source Control Provider. Please restart IDE." appears. This may be followed by an error saying "Initialize failed".  Despite these errors the files were added to source code control on the Microsoft Team Foundation Server.

Cause

Errors like this can occur because the Windows profile for the user is corrupted.

Resolution

Delete and recreate the Windows profile for the user.
