MFC Control Paints Differently in Japanese Version of Windows Vista

On a computer running the Japanese version of Windows Vista, you are running an application that uses a Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) 4.2 ActiveX control compiled with Visual C++ 6.0.
The control is not drawn correctly. Parts of it may not be drawn at all, or drawn out of place.
The version of MFC42.dll that shipped with Windows Vista is causing the drawing disparity.
There are two possible resolutions:
1. Upgrade the Visual C++ 6.0 project to Visual C++ 2005 or later, and rebuild it. This is the recommended approach since Visual C++ 6.0 is no longer supported.
2. Use Side-by-Side Deployment with a copy of the legacy version of MFC42.dll in the application folder.
   To do this:
   A. Place a copy of MFC42.dll from a Windows XP Pro machine in the application folder of the application which hosts the control.
    B. In the application folder, create an empty text file named:
           myApplication.exe.local
          where myApplication is the name of the host application.
