The search results are sorted inconsistently when you perform a "people search" that uses the "Refine by Job Title" feature in SharePoint Server 2007

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a "people search" that uses the Refine by Job Title feature in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, the search results are sorted inconsistently if there are more than three pages of results. For example, the results that are provided by the Refine by Job Title feature in the Refine Your Search pane may be sorted differently when you view successive pages of search results.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the SharePoint Server component that sorts the results does not receive the complete set of results for the Refine Your Search pane. The SharePoint Server component that sorts the results does not receive the complete set of results from the search-results Web part if more than three pages of results are received. This improves performance. When the user interface component receives a later set of search results, the refinement logic is applied to the results within a grouping of three pages only.

This behavior is expected when the search-results Web part uses the default settings.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, set the search-results Web part to return more results. This sacrifices latency performance to provide for more consistent sorting of the search results. To set the search-results Web part to return more results, follow these steps:
  1. Open the "people search" results page.
  2. On the Site Actions menu, click Edit Page.
  3. In the People Search Core Results Web part, click Edit, and then click Modify Custom Web Part.
  4. In the dialog box that contains the Web part properties, expand Results Display/Views.
  5. In the Results Per Page box, type a higher value.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
