SYMPTOMS

You try to perform a gradual upgrade from Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. In the Job Status section on the UpgradeStatus.aspx page, you receive an error message that resembles the following message:
Job failed
Additionally, you may receive the following message on the UpgradeStatus.aspx page:
Please refer to the upgrade log at drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Logs for additional information".
The Upgrade.log file may contain a message that resembles the following:

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if a URL in a Windows SharePoint Services site collection has more than 256 characters.

Note By design, URLs that have more than 256 characters are not supported in Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, make sure that the URLs in the SharePoint Services site collection do not exceed 256 characters.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

In the "Symptoms" section, the first entry in the Upgrade.log file is a URL that has more than 256 characters. As noted in the "Cause" section, URLs with more than 256 characters are not supported in Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

Additionally, the message contains the 0x80040E57 error code. The 0x80040E57 error code is defined in the following way:
A literal value in the command overflowed the range of the type of the associated column.
In this scenario, the 0x80040E57 error code means that a URL in a SharePoint site collection exceeds 256 characters.

Administrators are advised to run the Prescan.exe tool before they upgrade Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 site collections. However, the Prescan.exe does not report any problems when a Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 site collection contains a URL that has more than 256 characters. Therefore, the upgrade fails unexpectedly.
