You receive an error message when you try to install a slipstream installation of Microsoft Search Server 2008 or SharePoint Server 2007 on a server that is running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are installing a slipstream installation of Microsoft Search Server 2008, Search Server 2008 Express, or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.
  • The slipstream installation contains the 2007 Microsoft Office servers Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in the Updates folder.
  • You try to install the slipstream installation on a server that is running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.
In this scenario, the installation is not completed successfully. Additionally, you receive an error message that states that Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 must first be installed. The error message that you receive resembles the following error message:
Setup is unable to proceed due to the following error :
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=103318
Correct the issue listed above and re-run setup.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because you cannot use a slipstream installation of Search Server and SharePoint Server 2007 to upgrade a server that is running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 if the slipstream installation includes the 2007 Microsoft Office servers SP1 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 on a server that is running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 before you install the 2007 Microsoft Office servers SP1.
