Error message when you try to start Outlook 2007 after you install 2007 Office Suite Service Pack 1: "Outlook.ost is in use and cannot be accessed"

SYMPTOMS

You install 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1). When you try to start Office Outlook 2007, you may receive an error message that resembles one of the following:

In Windows XP
Microsoft Office Outlook Offline Folders

The file C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.ost is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any application that is using this file, and then try again. You might need to restart your computer.
In Windows Vista
Microsoft Office Outlook Offline Folders

The file C:\Users\user name\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.ost is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any application that is using this file, and then try again. You might need to restart your computer.
When you click OK to close the error message, the error message is repeated. When you click OK to close the error message again, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Outlook

Cannot open your default e-mail folders.
When you click OK to close the error message, Outlook 2007 exits unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if one of the following programs is running when 2007 Office Suite SP1 is installed:
  • Office Communicator 2005
  • Office Communicator 2007

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart the computer, and then start Outlook 2007.

MORE INFORMATION

The following files are held "in use" when Communicator 2005 or Communicator 2007 is running:
  • Contab32.dll
  • Emsmdb32.dll
  • Mspst32.dll
  • Mso.dll
  • Olmapi32.dll
  • Riched20.dll
If Communicator 2007 is running, the following file is also held "in use":
  • Msores.dll
The problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section varies depending on the installation user interface level of 2007 Office Suite SP1. For example, if 2007 Office Suite SP1 is applied by using the full user interface level, you are prompted to restart the computer. However, if a different user interface level is used, you may not be prompted to restart the computer.
