Error message when you try to upgrade Works 9 or Works SE 9 to an upgrade version of a 2007 Office suite

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upgrade Microsoft Works 9 or Microsoft Works SE 9 to an upgrade version of a 2007 Microsoft Office suite, you may receive the following error message:
Locate your earlier version of Microsoft Office.

Setup can’t find a version of Microsoft Office on your computer.
This problem occurs when you try to install one of the following 2007 Office suites:
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007 upgrade version
  • Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 upgrade version
  • Microsoft Office Standard 2007 upgrade version

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an error in Works 9 and in Works SE 9. During the upgrade process, Works does not provide the necessary information to the 2007 Office Setup program.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download the "Update for Microsoft Works 9 and Works SE 9," and then install the Office 2007 upgrade.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

The list of products that qualify for the upgrade version of the 2007 Office suite indicates that Works 9 is a qualifying product. The box for the upgrade version of the 2007 Office suite states the following:
The enclosed program will search your hard disk to confirm your eligibility for this upgrade. The software will install only if you are a licensed user of one of the following products:
  • Microsoft® Works 6.0 or later
  • Microsoft Works Suite 2000-2006 or later
  • Any 2000-2007 Office program or suite
  • Any Office XP Suite, except Student and Teacher Edition
