You cannot use the "Password to Open" feature or the "Password to Modify" feature in PowerPoint when you use a mandatory profile to log on to the computer

Article ID:940790
Last Review:December 27, 2007
Revision:2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use a mandatory profile to log on to a computer, you cannot use the "Password to Open" feature or the "Password to Modify" feature in Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, in PowerPoint 2003, and in PowerPoint 2007.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft Office does not control how the mandatory profile manages the encryption. When you use a mandatory profile to log on to a computer, you do not have permission to generate new public keys or new private keys. When you log off the computer, the keys are lost because you do not have permission to permanently modify the profile. Therefore, you do not have access to data that you encrypted.

This problem does not occur in Microsoft Word 97 or in Microsoft Word 2000.

Note Microsoft Word documents use Office-proprietary encryption technology that helps protect Word documents.
