Consider the following scenario:
- You install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Device Management Feature Pack (DMFP) on a device that is running Microsoft Windows CE 4.0 or Windows CE 5.0.
- You connect the device to a wireless network that is outside the corporate-managed network. For example, you connect the device to a Wi-Fi access point in an Internet cafe. Or, you connect the device by using a cellular data link.
In this scenario, you experience one of the following symptoms, or both:
- The battery life of the device is significantly reduced.
- The cellular data link that you use to connect the device to the network remains open. This device consumes lots of network bandwidth.
You do not experience this problem after you stop the DMFP client service on the device.
The DMFP client continuously tries to resolve the host name of the device management point (DMP) from the DNS server. The public DNS servers outside the corporate network cannot resolve the host name of the internal DMP. Therefore, the DMFP client receives a "No such name" response. However, the DMFP client continues to try the DNS query every 10 seconds.
To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix on the devices that have DMFP installed. You can also install the hotfix on an SMS site server and then deploy the Devmgmt.msi package to all the DMFP clients.
