SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Device Management Feature Pack (DMFP) on a device that is running Microsoft Windows CE 4.0 or Windows CE 5.0.
  • You connect the device to a wireless network that is outside the corporate-managed network. For example, you connect the device to a Wi-Fi access point in an Internet cafe. Or, you connect the device by using a cellular data link.
In this scenario, you experience one of the following symptoms, or both:
  • The battery life of the device is significantly reduced.
  • The cellular data link that you use to connect the device to the network remains open. This device consumes lots of network bandwidth.
You do not experience this problem after you stop the DMFP client service on the device.

CAUSE

The DMFP client continuously tries to resolve the host name of the device management point (DMP) from the DNS server. The public DNS servers outside the corporate network cannot resolve the host name of the internal DMP. Therefore, the DMFP client receives a "No such name" response. However, the DMFP client continues to try the DNS query every 10 seconds.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix on the devices that have DMFP installed. You can also install the hotfix on an SMS site server and then deploy the Devmgmt.msi package to all the DMFP clients.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have System Management Server 2003 Device Management Feature Pack installed on the device.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the device after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.
