Error message when you save a document in Accounting Professional 2007, in Accounting Express 2007, or in Small Business Accounting 2006: "The Date of this Record cannot precede the initial posting date of the company"

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

When you save a document in Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007, in Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2007, or in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, you receive the following error message:
The Date of this Record cannot precede the initial posting date of the company.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions about the date of the document that you try to save is true:
  • The date is earlier than the "prevent posting before" date.
  • The date is earlier than the company start date.
Note The company start date is entered when the company is created.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Change the "prevent posting before" date to a date that is earlier than the document date. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Accounting Professional 2007, Accounting Express 2007, or Small Business Accounting 2006.
  2. On the Company menu, click Preferences.
  3. In the Company Preferences dialog box, verify the date that is in the Prevent posting before field in the Fiscal year area according to the following criteria:
    • If the date is correct, change the "prevent posting before" date that is in the document to a later date.
    • If the date is incorrect, change this date in the Company Preferences dialog box to a date that is earlier than the document date.

Method 2

Change the company start date to a date that is earlier than the document date.

Notes
  • In Small Business Accounting 2006, the company start date cannot be viewed or modified. To work around this behavior, change the document date to a date that is accepted by the program.
  • In Accounting Professional 2007 or in Accounting Express 2007, the company start date cannot be modified to a date that comes before a closed fiscal year. To modify the company start date to a date that comes before a closed fiscal year, the closed fiscal year must be reopened.

To change the company start date to a date that is earlier than the document date, follow these steps:
  1. Start Accounting Professional 2007 or Accounting Express 2007.
  2. On the Company menu, click Preferences.
  3. Click Fiscal Year.
  4. Click Change Start Date.
  5. In the Start date box, change the company start date to a date that is earlier than the document date. Then click OK.
