The words "Friendster," "Klum," "Nazr," "Obama," and "Racicot" are not recognized when you check the spelling of English-language text in the Office 2003 programs

SYMPTOMS

When you check the spelling of English-language text in a Microsoft Office 2003 program, one of the following words is not recognized and is flagged as a possible misspelling:
  • Friendster
  • Klum
  • Nazr
  • Obama
  • Racicot

WORKAROUND

To prevent the Office 2003 programs from flagging an unrecognized word, add the word to the dictionary. To do this, perform one of the following actions:
  • Right-click the flagged word, and then click Add to Dictionary.
  • Click Add to Dictionary in the Spelling & Grammar dialog box.
When you add the word to the dictionary, the word is added to the Custom.dic dictionary file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Some words may not be in the English-language dictionary in the Office 2003 programs. When a word is not in the dictionary, the spelling checker tries to suggest words that have spellings that resemble the unrecognized word.

Occasionally, Microsoft updates the standard dictionaries. The words "Friendster," "Klum," "Nazr," "Obama," and "Racicot" are currently not in the English-language dictionary. When a word is the last name of a public figure, Microsoft also adds the first name of the public figure. Additionally, the word "Barack" will be added to the dictionary.

A hotfix will be released that will automatically add these words to the English-language dictionary. These words may also be added by using the workaround steps in this article.
