A mail program cannot connect to an Exchange Server 2007 server by using SSL over SMTP port 587

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

When a mail program tries to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 server by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) over Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port 587, the connection cannot be completed.

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You are running Windows Mail on a computer that is running Windows Vista.
  • You are running Outlook Express on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
  • You are running Outlook Express on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1.
Note By default, Exchange 2007 uses port 587 for SSL connections.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Outlook Express and Windows Mail use port 25 for SSL connections. By default, Exchange 2007 uses port 587 for SSL connections.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix to the operating system on which you are running Outlook Express or Windows Mail.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other.
