FIX: A project is out of sync with source control when you rename a source file by using the name of a deleted file in a project in Visual Studio 2005

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the source control feature in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server Service Pack 1 (SP1). In Solution Explorer, you delete a source file in a project. Before you check in the pending changesets, you rename another source file by using the name of the deleted file. Then, you check in the pending changesets.

In this scenario, you receive a warning message that states that the deleted item already has pending changes. Additionally, the project is out of sync with source control. All the successive synchronization operations fail with different error messages.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Customer Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Notes
•After you apply this hotfix, a dialog box appears in Visual Studio when you rename a source file. The dialog box text states that the rename operation cannot be completed because of the pending deletion action. Therefore, you must perform the check-in operation before you rename a source file.
•You must apply this hotfix to the computer that is running Team Explorer.

Prerequisites

You must have Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite SP1 installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.
