The Title Master command is unavailable in PowerPoint 2000 when you open a presentation that was saved in PowerPoint 2007

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, the Title Master command is unavailable if you open a presentation when one of the following conditions is true:
  • The presentation was created in PowerPoint 2000. Additionally, the presentation was saved in the .ppt file format or in the .pptx file format in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.
  • The presentation was created in PowerPoint 2007. Additionally, the presentation was saved in the .ppt file format or in the .pptx file format.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of a file compatibility issue between PowerPoint 2000 and PowerPoint 2007. The Title Master command cannot be used in PowerPoint 2007.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Start PowerPoint 2000.
  2. On the File menu, click New to create a new slide.
  3. On the Format menu, click Apply Design Template.
  4. In the Apply Design Template task pane, click any design template that has the title master. For example, click Nature.pot.
  5. On the View menu, point to Master, and then click Slide Master.
  6. On the Slide Master View toolbar, click Insert New Title Master, and then type any characters.
  7. On the File menu, click Save.
  8. Name the file, and save it in the .ppt file format.
  9. Start PowerPoint 2007.
  10. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.
  11. In the Open dialog box, click the file that you saved in step 7, and then click Open.
  12. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Save As.
  13. Save the file in the .pptx file format or in the .ppt file format.
  14. In PowerPoint 2000, open the file that you saved in step 13.
  15. On the View menu, point to Master.
The Title Master command is unavailable in PowerPoint 2000.
