You cannot start the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service, and you receive an error message that mentions "service-specific error code 41539"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service, you receive the following error message:
Windows could not start the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server on Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 41539.
The SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service does not start. When this problem occurs, the following event is logged in the System log:
Event ID: 7024
Source: Service Control Manager
Type: Error
Description: The SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service terminated with service-specific error 41539.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server logon account does not have the following permissions:
  • Read permissions to the Windows registry
  • Modify permissions to the Logs folder

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, grant the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server logon account the required permissions.

By default, the path of the Logs folder is "%ProgramFiles%\Softricity\SoftGrid Server\Logs." This path is configured in the local registry on the SoftGrid Virtual Application server. By default, the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server service logon account is the Local System account.

To grant the required permissions, follow these steps:
  1. Determine the SoftGrid Virtual Application Server logon account. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then press ENTER.
    2. Right-click SoftGrid Virtual Application Server, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Log On tab and note the logon account.
    4. Exit Services.
  2. Make sure that the logon account has Read permissions. To do this, follow these steps.

Note By default, the SoftGrid Server key and subkeys are configured to inherit permissions from the parent key. If this configuration has been disabled, you must add the account to each subkey.
    1. Start Registry Editor.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Softricity
      .
    3. In the details pane, right-click Softricity, and then click Permissions.
    4. Make sure that the account that you noted in step 1c has Read permissions.
  3. Determine the path of the Logs folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Softricity\SoftGrid Server\CurrentVersion
    2. In the details pane, right-click SOFTRICITY_SOFTGRID_LOG_DIR, and then click Modify.
    3. Note the path of the Logs folder, and then click Cancel.
    4. Exit Registry Editor.
  4. Make sure that the logon account has Modify permissions. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In Windows Explorer, right-click the Logs folder, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Security tab, and then make sure that the account that you noted earlier has Modify permissions.
    3. Exit Windows Explorer.
