Consistency checks fail with ID 104 in Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006
On a computer that is running Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Type: Consistency check
Status: Failed
Description: An unexpected error occurred during replication of D:\ on ClientServer. (ID 104 Details: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057))
Start time: Date and Time
Time elapsed: elapsedTime
Data transferred: 10.00 GB (10737418240 bytes)
Data transfer rate: 3.20 MB/s
Source details: D:\ on ClientServer
Protection group members: 4
Details
Protection group: ProtectionGroup1
This problem may occur if the volume that is mentioned in the error message is heavily fragmented.
To resolve this problem, follow these steps for the volume that is mentioned in the error message:
- Start the Data Protection Manager 2006 Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, and then remove the volume from the protection group. When you do this, select the option to keep the replica.
Note This step removes the synchronization log file from the protected volume. Additionally, this step frees additional hard disk space. - If the volume has less than 30 percent available hard disk space, move some data to another location to free at least 30 percent hard disk space.
- Run the Disk Defragmenter tool to defragment the files on the affected volume.
- Add the volume back to a protection group, and then run a Consistency Check operation. This action makes sure that the replica is consistent with the protected volume.
Note When you run the Consistency Check operation, you may experience a decrease in the unallocated space. This behavior occurs because the Consistency Check operation re-creates the synchronization log file.
Note We recommend that you defragment the files on a volume before you add the volume to a protection group. This step helps limit fragmentation of the synchronization log file.
