Error message when you try to start DPMBackup.exe program after you install Data Protection Manager 2006 SP1: "Failed to start DPM Writer Service"

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you receive the following error message when you try to run the DPMBackup.exe program:
Failed to start DPM Writer Service

WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this problem, increase the time-out value for the service control manager component to 60 seconds. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
  3. If the ServicesPipeTimeout registry entry does not appear in the right pane, create this registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    2. In the New Value#1 box, type ServicesPipeTimeout, and then press ENTER.
  4. In the right pane, right-click ServicesPipeTimeout, and then click Modify.
  5. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal, type 60000 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    Note This value represents the time-out period for a service in milliseconds.
  6. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
