Error message when you try to start or to exit PowerPoint 2003: "Setup Error, Failed to load resources from resource file"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start or to exit Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Setup Error, Failed to load resources from resource file. Please check setup.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • Data Assistant for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 is installed.
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later service pack is installed.
Data Assistant for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 is incompatible with Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later service packs.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove the Microsoft Data Assistant 1.0 from the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. In the list of currently installed programs, click Microsoft Data Assistant 1.0, and then click Remove.
  3. Follow the instructions to remove Microsoft Data Assistant 1.0.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, click OK to close the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. Data Assistant for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 will no longer function as expected in PowerPoint 2003 SP1 or later service packs.

Data Assistant for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 helps integrate charts and graphs from the following programs into your Microsoft PowerPoint presentations:
  • Microsoft Office Excel 2003
  • Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003
However, you can use the copy-and-paste function to copy a chart or a worksheet into a Microsoft PowerPoint slide.

Note Data Assistant for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 is no longer available for download. Additionally, Data Assistant for Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 has limited support until December 2006.
