FIX: You may receive an error message when you try to generate a Web reference for a Web service by using the Wsdl.exe tool in the .NET Framework 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to generate a Web reference for a Web service by using the Web Services Description Language tool (Wsdl.exe) in the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, the operation fails and you may receive the following error message:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC>wsdl http://WebServiceURL/WebServiceName.asmx?wsdl Microsoft (R) Web Services Description Language Utility [Microsoft (R) .NET Framework, Version 2.0.50727.42] Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Error: Unable to import binding 'WebServiceNameSoap' from namespace 'http://tempuri.org/IICOWebService/IICOWebService'.
- Unable to import operation 'UpdateBankReference'.
- Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Note You do not experience this problem in the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To apply this hotfix, you must be running the .NET Framework 2.0.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem use the /order command-line switch. For example, type the following command at the command prompt:
wsdl.exe /order:explicit http://WebServiceURL/WebServiceName.wsdl
Note The /order switch may generate a slightly different object model.
