SYMPTOMS

For Windows Server 2003

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. The version of the Wmp.dll file on the computer is v.9.00.2991.
  • You install security update 911565 on the computer. The version of the Wmp.dll file changes to v.9.00.3344.

    Note Security bulletin MS06-005 describes security update 911565.

  • You install Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the computer. Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 is upgraded to Windows Media Player 10. The version of the Wmp.dll file changes to v.10.00.3700.
In this scenario, when you remove security update 911565, the version of the Wmp.dll file reverts to v.9.00.2991. Additionally, you cannot start Windows Media Player.

For Windows XP

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a Windows XP-based computer. The version of the Wmp.dll file on the computer is 9.0.0.3250.
  • You install security update 911565 on the computer. The version of the Wmp.dll file changes to 9.0.0.3344.

    Note Security bulletin MS06-005 describes security update 911565.

  • You install Windows Media Player 10 on the computer. The version of the Wmp.dll file changes to 10.0.0.3802.
In this scenario, when you remove security update 911565, the version of the Wmp.dll file reverts to 9.0.0.3250. Additionally, you cannot start Windows Media Player.

WORKAROUND

For Windows Server 2003

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Remove security update 911565 before you install Windows Server 2003 SP1.
  • Reinstall Windows Server 2003 SP1.

For Windows XP

To work around this issue, reinstall Windows Media Player 10.

  • Windows Media Player 10, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
