The sound effects and music in Age of Empires III may stop after you play the game for some time

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

When you play Microsoft Age of Empires III, the sound effects and music may stop after you play the game for some time.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • The latest game update is not installed.
  • There is a problem with the LeisurelyBrows.mp3 sound file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods.

Method 1: Install the latest game update

To download and install the latest game update for Age of Empires III, click Help and Tools on the main game screen, and then click Update Game. Alternatively, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.agecommunity.com/gameUpdates.aspx (http://www.agecommunity.com/gameUpdates.aspx)

Method 2: Rename the LeisurelyBrows.mp3 sound file

To rename the LeisurelyBrows.mp3 sound file, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. In the left pane, locate and then click the following folder:
    Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires III\Sound\Music\Standard
Note In this folder path, Drive represents the drive letter of the hard disk on which you have installed Age of Empires III.
  3. In the right pane, locate and then right-click LeisurelyBrows.mp3. Then, click Rename.
  4. Type LeisurelyBrows.old, and then press ENTER.

Note You have to remember the location of the renamed sound file. You have to do this because the file has to be renamed back to the .mp3 extension if a future game update is available for download.
  5. On the File menu, click Close.
  6. Restart the game.

Method 3: Troubleshoot general sound-related issues
