FIX: You receive LNK2001 and LNK1120 error messages when you use the Vcbuild.exe command-line tool to build a Visual C++ solution
When you use the Vcbuild.exe command-line tool to build a Microsoft Visual C++ solution, you receive the following error messages:
error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol Symbol Name
fatal error LNK1120: x unresolved externals
This problem does not occur when you use the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE to build the solution.
This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
- The solution is dependant on one or more static library projects.
- One or more of the required static library projects is in turn dependant on one or more additional static library projects.
- Not all the static library projects are passed as link arguments in the Vcbuild.exe command-line tool.
Under these conditions, the Vcbuild.exe command-line tool cannot resolve the references to all the static library projects.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.
