The Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) service on a MOM agent may not start after a system restart when you use the Citrix Management Pack for MOM 2000 to monitor a server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Citrix Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 to monitor a server, the MOM service (Momservice.exe) on the MOM agent may not start after a system restart. This problem may occur when all the following conditions are true:
  • The server has the MOM 2005 agent installed.
  • The server is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  • The server is running Citrix MetaFrame XP or Citrix Presentation Server.

Note You can manually start the MOM service after a system restart.

Additionally, the following event is logged in the application event log on the MOM agent computer:

Source: Microsoft Operations Manager
EventID: 9001
Type: Error
Description: MOM Engine of Management Group management group name failed to start in the allocated time.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) cannot start the Citrix WMI Service at the same time that the MOM service is starting. WMI cannot do this up because the Service Control Manager database is locked. If the Citrix WMI Service does not start, a rule in the Citrix Management Pack will not register its WMI event query. Therefore, MOM cannot successfully start its configuration group and the MOM service shuts itself down.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. In the MOM 2005 Administrator Console, expand Microsoft Operations Manager (groupname), expand Management Packs, expand Rule Groups, expand Citrix MetaFrame, expand MetaFrame Server Rules, and then expand Event Rules.
  2. For all the following rules, right-click the rule, click Properties, and then click to clear the This rule is enabled check box to disable the rule:
    • Disconnections: subscribe to sessions disconnection events
    • Disconnections: check rate of disconnections
    • Disconnections: rate of session disconnects is high
    • Zone elections: subscribe to zone election events
    • Zone elections: check rate of zone elections
    • Zone elections: rate of elections is high

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
