Error message when you open a message that is signed by a digital certificate that is issued by a third-party certification authority in Windows 98 or in Windows Millennium Edition: "Security Alert"
Consider the following scenario:
- You use a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Millennium Edition.
- You open an e-mail message that is signed by a valid digital certificate.
- This digital certificate is issued by a third-party certification authority (CA).
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Security Alert
Digital ID may not be invalid or cannot determine the validity of this certificate.
(Digital ID may be still valid or the validity of this certificate cannot be determined.)
You experience this problem if the certificate storage contains multiple CA certificates that have different expiration dates. Typically, the problem that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section does not occur with the certificate that has the longest validity period. However, this problem may occur with the certificate that has the shortest validity period.
To work around this issue, import the CA certificate that has the longest validity period again.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
