SYMPTOMS

When you have one or more of the programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section installed and you try to install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), you receive the following error message:
The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
Note This 1642 error message is also logged in the Office 2003 SP2 update installation log file.

Additionally, when you install Office 2003 SP2 in the following scenarios, the Setup program may not be completed, and you do not receive notification:
  • You install Office 2003 SP2 by using the Microsoft Office Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site.
  • You download Office 2003 SP2 from the Microsoft Download Center, and you install the service pack in silent mode.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when you install Office 2003 SP2 when the following conditions are true:
  • You have Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.
  • You have Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0 installed.
This issue has not been found to occur when you install Office 2003 SP2 when any one of the following conditions is true:
  • You have Windows Installer 3.0 installed, but you do not have Office 2003 SP1 installed.
  • You have Windows Installer 2.0 installed, and you have Office 2003 SP1 installed.
  • You have Windows Installer 2.0 installed, but you do not have Office 2003 SP1 installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order that they are presented. If the first method does not resolve your issue, try the second method.

Method 1: Install Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2)

To resolve this issue, install Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2).

To determine which version of Windows Installer is installed on the computer, follow these steps:
  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the Msi.dll file. This file is located in the following folder:
    Windows\System 32
  2. Right-click the Msi.dll file, and then click Properties.

It's anti priacy measure. Even after install Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435), my priated Windows XP still doesn't work with my recent purchase software. The Error 1722 appear.
