You receive a "The server administration programs and the server extensions on the Web server are too old' error message when you try to use FrontPage Server Extensions
SYMPTOMS
When you try to use Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions to extend a Web site that resides on a computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS), you may receive the following error message:
The server administration programs and the server extensions on the web server are not compatible. The administration program is too old to use with this server
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the Web site is created in the Web site content directory as a disk-based Web using Microsoft FrontPage 2002. In this case, the FrontPage Server Extensions
meta data
_vti_extenderversion variable that is located in the Service.cnf file may contain an incorrect version number.
Note The Service.cnf file is located in the _vti_pvt folder.
This behavior also occurs when the FrontPage Server Extensions are incorrectly removed.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Copy the content from the Web site content folder to a temporary location. (Alternatively, you can open the content as a disk-based Web in FrontPage 2002, and then publish the content to the new temporary location.)
- Delete all the content from the original Web site folder.
- Extend the Web site by using the FrontPage Server Extensions.
- Use FrontPage 2002 to publish the content from the temporary disk-based Web location to the newly extended Web site using HTTP.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, change the
vti_extenderversion variable in the Service.cnf file to match the current version of the FrontPage Server Extensions. You must first determine the version and then replace the value with the version on the extended Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
- View the extended Web site under Virtual Servers on the FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 Server Administration Web site to determine the current FrontPage Server Extensions version.
- Replace the vti_extenderversion value with the version on the extended Web site after the SR| text.An example of the value may appear as the following:
vti_extenderversion:SR|5.0.2.6417
.
