Description of the critical update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2

SUMMARY

The security updates for Microsoft Office XP, for Microsoft Visio 2002, and for Microsoft Project 2002 documented in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-028 appear to install correctly. However, the installation may not have completed successfully. To help protect your computer, we are providing a new update to address this problem.

You need this update only if the following conditions are true:
  • Your computer requires the 832332  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=832332/EN-US/ ) security update, the 831932  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=831932/EN-US/ ) security update, or the 831931  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=831931/EN-US/ ) security update.
  • You previously installed the original version of the 832332  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=832332/EN-US/ ) security update, the 831932  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=831932/EN-US/ ) security update, or the 831931  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=831931/EN-US/ ) security update that was released on September 14, 2004.
  • The original version of the 832332  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=832332/EN-US/ ) security update, the 831932  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=831932/EN-US/ ) security update, or the 831931  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=831931/EN-US/ ) security update did not correctly update the Mso.dll file in your %Programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10 folder.

To install this update from the Windows Update Web site, follow these steps:
  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)
  2. Click Express Install (Recommended).
  3. If your computer is affected by this problem, Critical Update 885884 is automatically selected for you to install. Click Install.
  4. Review and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
Critical Update 885884 will be downloaded to your computer, and the Setup wizard will help you install it.

Prerequisites

This update requires the following prerequisites:
  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
  • Microsoft Office XP

Restart requirements

In some cases, Critical Update 885884 does not require a restart. If the required files are in use, this update will require a restart. If this occurs, a message appears that advises you to restart. Because this update is in the Mso.dll file, closing all Microsoft Office applications prior to the installation of Critical Update 885884 will usually remove the need for a restart.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Deployment information

Software Update Services (SUS) may also be used to deploy Critical Update 885884. SUS allows customers to install a service that can download all critical updates and security updates and service packs as they are posted at the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:

i was pushed this updates and whenever it tried to apply it, it will show me the blue screen. I am using a T23 IBM thinkpad notebook.
