The file is opened as a compressed folder or you receive an error message when you try to open a Learning Resource that has an .ims file name extension in Internet Explorer to preview or to import the file in Class Server - Teacher
When you try to open a Learning Resource that has an .ims file name extension in Microsoft Internet Explorer to preview or to import the file in Microsoft Class Server - Teacher, you experience one of the following symptoms:
- The file is opened as a compressed (zipped) folder.
- You receive the following error message:
The following Learning Resource cannot be saved or assigned because of damaged or missing files.
Note Class Server - Teacher should open and let you preview or import the .ims file.
This problem occurs after you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
The following steps apply to Microsoft Internet Information Services 6.0 on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. Similar instructions apply to other Web servers.
These instructions will update Internet Information Services (IIS) so that IIS and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), if it is installed, will return the correct MIME types for downloaded learning resource files (.ims and .lrm).
Note Follow these instructions carefully. There are several locations in IIS where you can configure MIME types. However, you must configure the MIME types for .ims and .lrm at the top level of the server or WSS will not respect the setting.
To configure IIS to return the correct MIME types for .ims and .lrm files, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
- In the left pane of Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, right-click the name of the server, and then click Properties.
- In the Properties dialog box, click MIME Types.
- In the MIME Types dialog box, locate the .ims file name extension.
- If the .ims file name extension does not exist, click New, or if the file name extension exists, click Edit.
- In the Extension box, type .ims, in the MIME type box, type application/vnd.ms-ims, and then click OK.
- In the MIME Types dialog box, locate the .lrm file name extension.
- If the .lrm file name extension does not exist, click New, or if the file name extension exists, click Edit.
- In the Extension box, type .lrm, in the MIME type box, type application/vnd.ms-lrm, and then click OK three times.
- Restart Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0. To do this:
- Right-click the computer name in Internet Services Manager, click All Tasks, and then click Restart IIS.
- In the Restart dialog box, click Restart Internet Services on COMPUTERNAME, and then click OK.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
Microsoft Internet Explorer in Windows XP SP2 treats Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) types differently than earlier versions of Internet Explorer. If the Web server does not specify a MIME type for files that have an .ims file name extension, Internet Explorer will examine the file and determine that it is compressed in "zipped" format. Therefore, Internet Explorer will display a downloaded .ims file as a compressed (zipped) folder instead of opening the file in Class Server - Teacher.
Alternatively, if the Web server specifies the Microsoft Learning Resource Module (LRM) MIME type (application/vnd.ms-lrm) for files that have an .ims file name extension, Internet Explorer changes the file name extension of the file in its cache to .lrm. Therefore, Class Server - Teacher incorrectly assumes the file is an .lrm file instead of an .ims file. In that scenario, you receive the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section.
