Error message when you try to run the Wireless Network Setup Wizard after you update to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005

INTRODUCTION

The Wireless Network Setup Wizard and the View Available Wireless Networks feature both rely on the Wireless Zero Configuration service to provide their functionality to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Microsoft Windows XP Table PC Edition 2005. If the Wireless Zero Configuration service is not available, you receive an error message that directs you to this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior occurs for several reasons. Some computer and hardware manufacturers provide their own configuration software that replaces the Wireless Zero Configuration service that is provided in Windows. In that case, you must use the software that is provided by the manufacturer to configure your wireless network. If you want to use the Wireless Network Setup Wizard or the View Available Wireless Networks feature to configure your wireless device, see the documentation that came with your computer or with your wireless network card. Use this documentation to determine whether you can use the Wireless Zero Configuration service to configure your wireless network. Sometimes, you cannot use the Windows functionality.

If your computer or your wireless network adapter did not come with its own wireless network software, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click Network Connections.
  3. In Network Connections, click to select your wireless connection, and then click Change settings of this connection.
  4. On the Wireless Networks tab, click to select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.
  2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.
  3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
  4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.

If you receive an error message when you try to start the service, see the "References" section for more troubleshooting information.

Well here's great fun to be had, look for "2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration." and it can't be found in the list that pops up, because you're stuck with foreign translations in your local UI, in the midnight hour!

I've tried this helpful hint, however, after starting the service I am able to view outside networks, but cannot connect to them. Also, if I shut down or hibernate, I lose the settings & have to continually go back to the WZC service to correct. I am using a Wireless G-PCI adapter and after trying to set up a wireless network with the linksys WRT54G wireless router, I've had nothing but headaches and can't seem to get back to earth. I'm running XP and seem to be caught in a helpful hint circle. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I couldn't find the 'wireless network tab' either until I went into services, and discovered that even thought the zero wireless configuration service was set to 'automatic' it hadn't started. I started it, then selected for windows to configure the wireless connections in the 'wireless networks connections tab. Did a reboot and !presto! it worked. thanks for the support; also find it at Microsoft KB 871122 with other links to security key and encryption problems.

Hi, I'm trying to start the wzcsvc but it gives me an error msg saying it cannot be started because it's disabled or there is no association to the network adapter. Any idea how I can resolve the proble? (czcsvc is installed but cannot be started even after deleting third party wireless connection utilities and wizards) Thanks,

I agree on the non tab problem. Sure, I set the service to auto. But if the tab where im supposed to set the network connection to let windows auto configure does not exist, what do I do? Seems like a very common question that no one has bothered to answer. (wireless network tab; not where instructions says it should be on win xp service pack 2)

To make the missing tab appear, follow the directions above under "To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps: " That will give you the 'Wireless Networks' tab, from which you can follow the rest of the directions. It worked for me; the laptop is connected now via wireless.
