You cannot install Server Performance Advisor on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Server Performance Advisor (SPA) diagnostic utility on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows 2000, you may receive the following error messages during the installation setup process:
An exception occurred during the commit phase of the installation. This exception will be ignored and the installation will continue. However, the application might not function correctly after installation is complete. --> PlaDecompress
An exception occurred during the commit phase of the installation. This exception will be ignored and the installation will continue. However, the application might not function correctly after installation is complete. --> PlaiSetAclInDirectory

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the SPA utility is designed to run only in Windows Server 2003. SPA is not designed to run in earlier versions of Microsoft Windows operating systems.

This behavior may occur in Windows Server 2003 if specific services are not started, if there are issues with the Common Language Runtime (CLR) performance counters, or if the Server Performance Advisor Data folder is not empty.

RESOLUTION

If you experience these error messages on a Windows Server 2003 computer, confirm the following criteria is met and try installing SPA again:
  • The Windows Management Instrumentation service is started.
  • The Task Scheduler service is started.

Note You can work around this problem by renaming the Display Name of the service to the US English version. To do this, type the following command as an administrator at the command prompt:
sc config schedule displayname= "Task Scheduler"
  • There are no issues with the CLR performance counters.
  • Delete any files in the Server Performance Advisor Data folder.

Note You may need to remove read-only permissions on some of the files in the Data folder before you can delete them.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
