FIX: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException occurs intermittently with ADO.NET

Retired KB ArticleThis article was written about products for which Microsoft no longer offers support. Therefore, this article is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.

SYMPTOMS

In an ADO.NET application, you may intermittently receive the following exception error message:
System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index

Back to the top

CAUSE

You receive this error message if you create or destroy DataSet-related objects (such as a DataView object) in an event handler for a DataSet object, or in an object that is associated with a DataSet object. For example, this error was reproduced in an application that contained a grid control that was creating child DataView objects in a ListChanged event handler for the grid. This allows the internal state of the underlying DataSet object to change during an operation where it should remain static.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
   Date Time Version Size File name

WORKAROUND

Do not create or destroy DataSet-related objects (such as a DataView object) inside an event handler for a DataSet object.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

Back to the top

The call stack for this exception depends on the functionality of your application and the exact cause of the error. The following are two examples that have occurred when child DataView objects are created in the ListChanged event handler for a control:

Example call stack 1

System.Collections.ArrayList.get_Item(Int32 index)
Sstem.Data.DataTable.RecordStateChanged(Int32 record1, DataViewRowState oldState1, DataViewRowState newState1, Int32 record2, DataViewRowState oldState2, DataViewRowState newState2)
System.Data.DataTable.SetNewRecord(DataRow row, Int32 proposedRecord, DataRowAction action, Boolean isInMerge)
System.Data.DataRow.EndEdit()
System.Data.DataRow.set_Item(DataColumn column, Object value)
System.Data.DataRow.set_Item(String columnName, Object value)

Example call stack 2

System.Collections.ArrayList.get_Item(Int32 index)
System.Data.DataTable.ResetIndexes()
System.Data.Merger.MergeTable(DataTable src, DataTable dst)
System.Data.Merger.MergeTableData(DataTable src)
System.Data.Merger.MergeDataSet(DataSet source)
System.Data.DataSet.Merge(DataSet dataSet, Boolean preserveChanges, MissingSchemaAction missingSchemaAction)

Note These are examples only and are not the only call stacks that may occur with this error.
