"Project Encountered a Problem and Needs to Close" Error Message and Microsoft Project Quits Unexpectedly (Crashes) When You Save Your Project to Project Server
SYMPTOMS
When you connect to Microsoft Office Project Server 2003,
and you open or create a new project and then save the project to the server,
Microsoft Project quits unexpectedly (crashes) and you receive an error message
that is similar to the following:
Microsoft Project has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on
might be lost.
Restart Microsoft Project.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to
help us improve Microsoft Project. We will treat this report as confidential
and anonymous.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains
an error signature that is similar to the following:
AppName: winproj.exe AppVer: 11.0.2003.816 ModName: odbcmon.dll
ModVer: 10.0.2002.401 Offset: 000038be
CAUSE
This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are
true:
- You save your project to a database and you use a data
source name (DSN) to connect to the database.
- You save your project by using a file name that contains a
space character that comes immediately before (or comes immediately before and immediately after) the following string:
pwd
For example, this problem occurs if you save your project as
"MyProject pwd.Published" (without the quotation marks). However, this problem
does not occur if you save your project as "Pwd MyProject.Published" (without
the quotation marks).
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, when you save your project, do
not use a file name that contains a space character that comes immediately
before (or comes immediately before
and immediately after) the following string:
pwd

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
