You receive an "Administrative permissions on this machine are required to install this product" error message when you install a PowerPoint Template Pack in PowerPoint 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a PowerPoint Template Pack in PowerPoint 2003, the installation may fail, and you may receive the following message:
Administrative permissions on this machine are required to install this product.
You receive this message even when you log on to the computer with an account that is a member of the Power Users group.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you do not use an administrator account when you try to install a PowerPoint Template Pack in PowerPoint 2003. In Microsoft Office 2003, you must log on with an account that has administrative credentials to install Office 2003 components.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior:
  • Log on to the computer as an administrator before you install a PowerPoint Template Pack.

    -or-
  • Install the templates on a different computer where you have administrative credentials, and then manually copy the template files from that computer to the following folder location on the computer where you do not have administrative credentials:
    drive:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
where username is the account you are using to log on.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003
