Customizations to noise word files are not saved when you use the Backup and Restore tool

SYMPTOMS

When you restore your SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal from a backup made by using the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore tool, customizations that you made to the noise word files that are located in the following folder (where drive is the drive where SharePoint Portal Server is installed) are not restored:
drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\DATA
The noise word files are restored by using the default versions that are used when you install SharePoint Portal Server.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, make customizations to the noise word files on your SharePoint Portal Server at the portal level instead of at the root level.

Portal noise word files are stored in the following folder (where GUID is the GUID for the portal):
drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\DATA\Applications\GUID
Root level noise word files are stored in the following folder:
drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\DATA
For more information about how to work around this behavior, see the "Editing a Noise Word File" topic in the About Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide.

MORE INFORMATION

During a Backup operation, the contents of the following folder are not backed up:
drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\DATA
Only the contents that appear under the following program folder are included in a backup and restore:
drive:\Program Files\SharePoint Portal Server\DATA\Applications\GUID

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
