FIX: A courtesy redirect may return the ACv1VSite# host name instead of the cluster name

SYMPTOMS

A client that accesses a Microsoft Application Center 2000 cluster may receive ACv1VSite# as the host name returned, instead of receiving the cluster host name. This behavior may cause the client to return the following error message for later requests because ACv1VSite# is not a known host on the client side:
"Server not found"
Note This behavior does not occur on Windows Server 2003-based servers that run Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2. For more information, see the "More Information" section.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Application Center 2000 request forwarder (RF) does not correctly handle a forwarded 302 HTTP_STATUS_REDIRECT response for a courtesy redirect. The cluster name is passed to the client. The expected behavior is that the backend host header ACv1VSite# is passed to the client.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support (http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support)
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
Date Time Version Size File name
   --------------------------------------------------------
   20-Oct-2003 23:29 1.0.781.1 168,960 Rffilext.dll

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Because Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6 handles courtesy redirects in a different manner than IIS version 5 handles courtesy redirects, you do not need to install this hotfix on Application Center 2000 clusters that run on Microsoft Windows Server 2003.

On the load-balanced network interface, the courtesy redirect returns the wrong host header, as described in the following:
  • The client request is http://clustername/vdir.
  • The server response is 302 HTTP_STATUS_REDIRECT. The location header is http://ACv1VSite1/vdir/.

You expect the correct response of 301 HTTP_STATUS_MOVED and a location header of http://clustername/vdir/.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Application Center 2000 Standard Edition
