This article describes how to perform a full restore of Class Server data and how to move school information to another server.

You may want to migrate Class Server and school data to another server or to perform a full restore of Class Server data and of school information to a new instance of Class Server (for example, in situations where you reinstall the operating system or when you change the hard disk).

When you use the Class Server Backup Wizard to back up Class Server data, a registry file, Csregistry.reg, is created in the folder that contains the backup files. You must run this registry file on the new server before you restore Class Server data to the new server. By doing this step, you make sure that the GUID of the original school is restored to the new server.

How to Restore Class Server Data and How to Move School Information to Another Server

To perform a full restore of Class Server data and to move school information to another server:

1. Install Class Server to a "clean" Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer or to a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer.
   
   Important Do not run the Class Server Configuration tool until you complete steps 2 through 5.
2. Copy the folder that contains the Class Server backup files to a folder on the new server.
3. Start Windows Explorer, locate and then click the folder that contains the Class Server data that you want to restore.
4. Double-click the Csregistry.reg file.
5. When you are prompted, click Yes to add the information to the registry.
6. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Class Server, and then click Configuration. The Class Server Configuration tool starts.
7. Verify that the settings that are displayed on each tab of the Class Server Configuration tool are correct, and then click Save & Configure.
8. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Class Server, and then click Backup. The Class Server Backup Wizard starts.
9. If the Select a School dialog box is displayed, click a school, and then click OK.
10. Click Next.
11. On the Select Backup or Restore page, click Restore data to the server. Replace current files with backup copies and delete all changes made since the last backup., and then click Next.
12. On the Select a Source Folder page, specify the location on the local hard disk where you want to restore the data, and then click Next.
13. When you are prompted, click Yes to restore the backup files to the server.
14. On the Restore Complete page, click Finish.
15. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Class Server, and then click Configuration. The Class Server Configuration tool starts.
16. Verify that the settings that are displayed on each tab of the Class Server Configuration tool are correct, and then click Save & Configure.
