Using the Index Server in Scalable mode on a Windows Server 2003-based computer
SYMPTOMS
When you have multiple Web sites on a Microsoft Windows
Server 2003-based computer, you may find that the Microsoft Index Server
catalogs for each site and uses a lot of disk space.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the Index Server uses a separate
catalog for each Web site that you create on a server, and this may use a lot
of disk space when you have multiple Web sites on a Windows Server 2003-based
computer.
RESOLUTION
This problem was fixed in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft recommends that Web Presence Providers (WPP) of
Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions (FPSE) on Windows Server 2003-based
computers use Index Server to provide search capabilities. Wide Area
Information Service (WAIS) search functionality is not included in FrontPage
2002 Server Extensions for Windows Server 2003-based
computers.
FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions on Windows Server
2003-based computers that are running Index Server do not support Uniform
Naming Convention (UNC) redirection.
The feature for indexing multiple
sites in a single catalog, Access Control List (ACL) trimming and search
capabilities over Distributed File System (DFS)/UNC is available in Windows
Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Team Services
(STS) 1.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3).
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions, when used with:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit x86)

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
